〇Background of the Tanka Competition
Tanka is a traditional Japanese form of poetry composed of 31 syllables in the 5-7-5-7-7pattern.
Since the Meiji period(1868-1912), Nagoya has been active in the creation of Tanka.

■Application Period

From July 1 (Tuesday) to August 29 (Friday), until 24:00 (midnight).
The application form will close at 24:00.

Submissions from international students and learners of Japanese are welcome!

■Entry Rules

・Submit your own original unpublished tanka in Japanese.
    (works published in doujinshi, literary groups, or online are not eligible)​
・No joint authorship or group entries.
・You may submit up to three poems per person, but only one per theme.
・Tanka may have slightly more or fewer syllables than the standard 31, but aim for 31 characters.
・Do not insert spaces between phrases. (no "word-spacing")

・Applications using generative AI are not accepted.

Gold Prize (1 poem): ¥5,000 book tokens in Japan + printed on souvenir bookmark 
Silver Prize (2 poems): ¥3,000 book tokens in Japan + printed on souvenir bookmark 
Honorable Mention (2 poems): ¥1,000 book tokens in Japan + printed on souvenir bookmark 
Advisor’s Prize (3 poem): ¥1,000 book tokens in Japan + printed on souvenir bookmark 

■Award Announcement & Workshop

Winners will be announced during the event “Tanka Club @ Nagoya Award Ceremony & Workshop” below and later published on the official website.
Winners attending in person will receive the award at the event.
Those who cannot attend will be contacted and receive their award by mail in November.

※No notifications will be sent to non-winners. Thank you for your understanding.

※Please note that the Award Ceremony & Workshop will be held in Japanese.
Date: Saturday, November 1, 2025
Time: From 13:30 (approx. 2 hours)
Venue: Nagoya City Tanka Hall (Nagoya Municipal Subway: Fushimi Station, Exit 1)
Participation Fee: ¥500 (ticketed; details to be shared on the website and in flyers from mid-September)
Program:
First half: Announcement and commentary on Advisor and Leader Prizes
Second half: Tanka writing workshop by the Leaders (subject to change)

Submission Guidelines:

◆ Entries will not be considered for selection if they are deemed to fall under any of the following categories. Furthermore, if any of these are discovered after a prize has been awarded, the award may be revoked.

・Entries that do not meet the stated requirements or conditions of the call for submissions.
・Entries that violate public order or morals, or may potentially do so.
・Entries that related to political or religious activities.
・Entries that containing inappropriate content or expressions, or content that may cause discomfort or offence.
・Entries that infringe, or may potentially infringe, upon the copyrights, image rights, intellectual property rights, or any other rights of third parties.
・Entries that defame or slander third parties, or infringe upon their rights to honour or privacy, or may potentially do so.
・Entries that are in violation of laws and regulations, or are linked to criminal activity, or may potentially be so.
・Entries that have been simultaneously submitted to other competitions or contests.
・Entries that are deemed inconsistent with the purpose of this project.
・Entries that interfere, or may interfere, with the fair operation of this project.
・Entries that are illegible.
・Entries created using generative AI to compose the main text of the work.

◆ Submitted works cannot be amended after submission. Submitted entries will not be returned.

◆ While the copyright of submitted works remains with the entrant, by submitting a work, the entrant agrees to the following:
・Publication of the work (in full and under the entrant’s pen name or real name) on the official website of Tanka Club @ Nagoya.
・Secondary use by the Nagoya City Cultural and Artistic Promotion Division, Cultural and Historical Urban Development Department, Tourism and Cultural Exchange Bureau (hereafter referred to as “Nagoya City”), including but not limited to inclusion in commemorative materials for the project.
・Duplication of the work by Nagoya City for the purposes of project documentation and record-keeping.

◆ Minor edits, such as corrections of typographical errors, may be made prior to publication.

◆ Apart from the pen name or real name of prize-winning entrants published on the official website and related media, all personal information provided will be used solely by Nagoya City for administrative purposes related to this project and will not be used for any other purpose or disclosed to third parties. However, age and residential area (e.g., city or ward) may be disclosed in media coverage.

◆  We are unable to respond to any inquiries regarding the selection process.

◆  All costs associated with submission, including postage, internet connection fees, and communication charges, are the responsibility of the entrant.

◆  These guidelines shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Japan.

◆ Nagoya City reserves the right to amend these guidelines at any time without prior notice, should it deem such changes necessary. In the event that the guidelines are amended, any subsequent submission will be considered as agreement to the revised terms.
